Nelms extols ‘independence and curiosity’ of fourth-graders

Amanda Nelms taught swim lessons while in high school and college. She also has family members who are in the education field.

So teaching came natural to the fourth grade teacher at West Navarre Intermediate.

“As a kid, I always liked younger children and I always knew I wanted to work with kids,” Nelms said. “This is a great age group to work with. They can tie their own shoes, they are nice to each other and they still like me.”

Nelms’ efforts were recognized this year as she was named the school’s teacher of the year.
