Scoring multiple times in six of the seven innings, Navarre’s softball team opened its season with a 13-5 trouncing of Fort Walton Beach on the road.
Starting Alison Gutierrez, picked up the win, blanking the Vikings for five innings. She allowed just three hits and a walk while striking out seven.
“Not going to lie, (I was) a little jittery,” Gutierrez said. “I also have friends on this team (FWB), so it was even more important for me to not let up on them and bulldog through.”
The Vikings tagged Raider reliever Kaitlyn Wollenzien for five runs in the final two stanzas. However, Fort Walton Beach only managed seven hits and three walks between the two Navarre pitchers.
The Raiders capitalized on 10 hits, five walks and five errors to build the seven-run difference.
“We exposed some things we need to work on, but – bottom line – we’re going to be a scrappy team,” Navarre head coach Kelly Hayes said.
