Summer practice rolls on under the hot Florida sun on a Thursday morning in late June. Navarre softball players are fielding balls in the infield and outfield and locked in on sharpening their swings as well.
“It’s just about getting better, improving every day,” rising senior Allison Gutierrez said. “We had a great season last year, but everyone has their own little things they can improve on.”
Gutierrez is one of the handful of returning players the Raiders will have on their team in the spring of 2020. As a veteran player, she understands she is a leader and does her best to be one each week in the summer, be it in practice or games.
“It’s kind of overwhelming. I didn’t think this day would come,” Gutierrez said. “We have a lot of freshmen, and the big thing for us is leading them and mentoring them.”
Fellow soon-to-be-senior Mary Beloat has similar feelings.
“It’s intimidating being a leader but it’s also exciting,” Beloat said. “I love helping out the younger players. I remember what it was like to be one.”
A newcomer last season at Navarre, Caitlin Tilton made quite an impact as a freshman in the starting lineup.
