Santa Rosa Sheriff’s deputies arrested Navarre resident Brandon James Barnes, 34, June 3 for allegedly choking and attempting to sexually assault a woman.
Barnes allegedly choked the victim while striking her on the face and body, according to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s office arrest report. He pulled the victim’s hair and pushed her against the concrete floor. The victim had visible bruises and marks from the attack.
During the altercation, Barnes also ripped the victim’s shirt and fondled her breast. He also allegedly attempted to pull off her shorts, choking her intermittently throughout the altercation.
The victim provided deputies with an audio recording of part of the incident.
In a sworn interview, Barnes claimed he consumed an alcoholic beverage and blacked out. He stated he did have an argument with the victim but did not remember the evening of the incident.
Barnes was previously arrested for drunk driving in Santa Rosa in 2016 according to arrest records.
Barnes’s employment is listed as security forces at U.S. Air Force Hurlburt Field.
He has been charged with felony domestic battery and a life felony for sexual assault on a victim 12 years of age or older. If convicted, Barnes could face life in prison.
Barnes bond is set at $107,500. He remained in Santa Rosa County Jail as of Wednesday morning.
