Navarre left out of playoffs despite strong finish to year

Kobe Johnson thought teammate Xayvion Thomas was joking around Sunday about Navarre getting the cold shoulder when it came to getting into the playoffs.

After all, the Raiders went into their bye weekend Friday feeling they had done enough to punch a ticket to the postseason. Their belief was strengthened by the 52-14 win over Crestview in the regular-season finale Oct. 25 at Bennett C. Russell Stadium.

The Bulldogs, riding a four-game losing streak, suffered their worst loss of the season at the hands of the Raiders.

“None of us expected to get bumped out after the game we played against Crestview. Everyone was sure that we were in,” Johnson said.

That win was the second in a row for Navarre and its third victory in four games, pushing its overall record to 6-4 and its position in the 7A regional playoff poll up to seventh.

But during the bracket reveal Sunday, the Raiders learned their fate wasn’t what they hoped it would be.

For the first time since 2011, Navarre was left out of the postseason.
