Navarre falls in close game with rival Dolphins

Hailey Bastian scored twice and Autumn Slaybaugh added another goal in Navarre’s 4-3 preseason loss to Gulf Breeze last Wednesday.

Head coach Robert Simon was more interested in effort than the final score.

“I’m very happy,” Simon said. “To come out healthy is probably my No. 1 priority. Number 2, the girls played well. There was a lot of good things on the field today, the way we were moving the ball. They were trying to build out of the back and keep possession and move the ball forward.”

The forward pressure gave Navarre its first goal in the first 15 minutes of the match. Cami Acevedo fed Bastian for a shot, which hit the crossbar. Bastian collected the rebound and scored.

But as the first half wound down, Gulf Breeze’s offense seemed to temporarily pin the Raiders on the defensive half. That pressure paid off as the Dolphins tied the score at 1-1 at halftime.

“Some bad things were the turnovers we had, but that’s the first game of the season. You’re going to have things like that,” Simon said.
