Representatives from five northwest Florida counties spent two days in Washington D. C. this week hearing updates from top military officials and sharing ideas with lawmakers. The annual trip of the Northwest Florida Defense Coalition included representatives from Santa Rosa, Escambia, Okaloosa, Walton and Bay Counties.
Santa Rosa County military consultant Pete Gandy said the county has been part of this effort for about 10 years. “The military, mainly the Army and Air Force are requesting another BRAC (Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission) in 2017,” he said. Gandy co-chaired the local committee in 2005 that worked through the BRAC process. “The Air Force suffered very little loss in the 2005 BRAC, but since then they have been getting cut and more cuts are expected in the coming years.”
