The Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) began conducting Emerald Warrior, a joint training exercise in 2006. For the first time, the MQ-9 Reaper took part in the exercise at Hurlburt Field.
The Reaper, with roughly a 66-foot wingspan, quietly made its way down the runway at about 6:15 p.m., May 3 and was in the air over the Emerald Coast for about 8 hours. The May 3 flight was the Reaper’s only participation this year.
“A two-man crew here controls the Reaper for takeoff and landing, but a crew at Cannon Air Force Base actually controls it via satellite the rest of the time,” said Lt. Christopher Hill.
