Madril recognized as one of top players in state

It comes as no surprise that Emily Madril is the 4A State Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. The Navarre junior has established herself as one of the best in Florida and the recognition is something she feels honored to receive.

“It’s a special feeling,” Madril said. “It’s cool to be recognized but my teammates deserve a lot of the credit for it.”

Madril, who moved to Navarre from Idaho last year, finished the 2015-16 campaign with 40 goals and 24 assists. She has scored 100 points in two seasons with the Raiders, who ended the year with a 21-4-4 record and were the district runner-up as well.

“Emily’s game is just a step above – her drive to win and succeed is what carries her,” Navarre head coach Rob Simon said. “She is a great teammate. She doesn’t try to stand out. She fits in with everybody. She is always nonchalantly going about her business, doing the right thing and getting good grades.”

There is no question that Madril is a great teammate. Because of her reputation as a scoring threat, opponents defended her more tightly, putting her in a position to either attempt to force a shot or set up a teammate for a scoring opportunity.

She never hesitated to look for her teammates.

“I feel like teams were definitely more aware of me this year,” Madril said. “I had to outsmart them, dragging the defense out and let my teammates come in. I understood that it couldn’t all come from me. I passed it off more and gave my teammates opportunities to score.”

The season didn’t end as the Raiders had hope, their dream of a return to the state final four dashed in a regional quarterfinal loss to Leon. Navarre lost 4-3 in double overtime.

“It was tough to have it end that way,” Madril said. “That wasn’t how I wanted the season to go.”
