Santa Rosa County is trying to give about 400 Navarre Beach leaseholders some incentive to pay their delinquent lease fees by imposing a deadline.
But the measure recommended to commissioners by County Attorney Roy Andrews lacks teeth.
Instead, meeting the county’s new Nov. 1 deadline to catch up on overdue lease fees – which in some cases range from a few hundred dollars to more than $9,000 on each property – merely offers the same incentive the tardy leaseholders have long ignored: capping their fees at $250 annually dating back to Nov. 1, 2014.
“What’s the sweetener?” asked Larry Jones, whose lease on his Sunset Harbour Villas condominium hasn’t been paid since 2012. He acknowledges the accuracy of county records that show him to be $1,620 in arrears.
