Everyone has a story to tell, including Richard Bathurst, who is a member of the Purple Heart Chapter in Milton.
He enlisted in the military after three of his friends from back home were killed in Vietnam. He did it to avenge their deaths.
Bathurst started out in basic training and soon made the leap to advanced infantry training and then went to jump school. He was assigned to an airborne division in Vietnam. His job there was simple.
“Our mission was to search and destroy, which is to find the enemy and kill them,” Bathurst said.
Shortly into his venture to the jungle he saw death.
