Santa Rosa County Commission Chairman Don Salter, the District 3 commissioner since 2000, was named board chairman Nov. 18. Since then, in the wake of voters rejecting a temporary tax to fund a new county courthouse, Salter proposed an early 2015 workshop to devise ways to increase county revenues.
Commissioners at their Dec. 11 meeting approved scheduling the workshop for Jan. 28. The board is expected not only to brainstorm ideas for covering the $50 million courthouse, such as another attempt at a local option sales tax, but also discuss other unfunded projects and unsettled issues, including beach lease fees.
“We can’t keep doing more for less,” Salter said, suggesting the board explore potential revenue sources. “I think it’s our job to be bold enough to look at every potential,” he said, adding, “Don’t get too excited. We’re just doing our job.”
