Developer Steve Hering is seeking a zoning variance on 8-and-half vacant acres of Navarre Beach to build a 70-house subdivision he calls “Topaz Beach-An Island Community.”
Hering needs the county commission’s approval – not to mention financing – to break ground as he proposes in December or January.
”These will be beautiful houses: steel construction, no wood. Very upscale,” said Hering, who estimated that prices on some models may exceed $1 million.
But Hering is well aware that island residents have pushed back against some prospective developments, including other developers’ planned condominium project on a parcel inside Navarre Beach Park. After considerable public opposition, including a petition with more than 1,000 signatures, those developers withdrew their request that the commission approve an amendment of their lease–which only allows the construction of a marina there.
