Navarre Chamber Foundation gears up for 2018 Okaloosa Gas Navarre Fishing Rodeo

The Navarre Beach Area Chamber Foundation welcomes Okaloosa Gas District to the 2018 fishing rodeo slated for Oct. 6-7 on Navarre Beach.

Organized by the Navarre Beach Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the event is entering its sixth year and is one stop on what will be the 15th annual Beaches to Woodlands Tour. The rodeo benefits Navarre’s Take a Kid Fishing and the entities included in the Navarre Beach Marine Park.

“Navarre has been an intricate piece to the pipeline system of Okaloosa Gas since the early 1990s,” explains Gordon King, CEO of Okaloosa Gas District. “As our system grows, our company sees the importance of actively participating in all the communities we serve to include Navarre.  In recent years, Okaloosa Gas has participated in large community events such as the Navarre Fun Fest and Tunes by the Dunes.  We see the Navarre Fishing Rodeo as another way of giving back to the Navarre community – it is an honor to be able to do so.”

The event will again coincide with the annual Take A Kid Fishing clinic on the Navarre Beach Fishing Pier. It’s scheduled for Oct. 6 from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Hundreds of children participate each year and receive free fishing poles to take home.

There will also be free admission on the pier on both days of the rodeo.

“The fishing rodeo is the event we look forward to all year long. It is great fun and we are so pleased and excited to have Okaloosa Gas joining us as the title sponsor. We are proud of all the work they are doing in Navarre,” Foundation president Sandi Kemp said.

“The Navarre Area is quickly establishing itself as one of the most relaxing places to live and vacation in Florida,” King said. “The beaches are beautiful, and the community as a whole is very well established.  Natural gas is the most cost-effective alternative to enhance the lifestyles of everyone during times of relaxation or during times of crisis like power outages caused by storms.”

The benefits of natural gas include self-sustainability, reliability and cost savings.  Okaloosa Gas will endeavor to bring these very fundamental elements of life to all residents and businesses in Navarre. Moving forward, Okaloosa Gas has plans to begin expanding as economic conditions allow to areas along Highway 87 to points west to include Holley by the Sea, Hidden Creek and Navarre Beach.

“Build-out of this venture will take some time, however, the District is committed to moving forward with this expansion project.  Okaloosa Gas will be present in the Navarre community and continue on its journey to become Navarre’s Energy of Choice,” King added.

Early bird registration runs through Sept. 16 and the cost is $38. The registration fee rises to $48 after that date. Registration can be done at NavarreFishingRodeo.com and at Half Hitch Tackle in Navarre and Gulf Breeze Bait and Tackle in Gulf Breeze. As an added bonus, registrants receive a “Captain’s Bag” filled with gifts from sponsors. Mojo Sportswear Company is partnering with the rodeo for the fourth year by providing a performance fishing shirt which is guaranteed for the first 200 paid participants that registered for the rodeo.

Six divisions will highlight the rodeo, including the Navarre Seafood Open Division and the Half Hitch Kayak Division. Windjammers Junior Division, and the Scooter’s Fish House Offshore Slam, Scooter’s Fish House Inshore Slam and the Invasive Lion Fish Division, which requires no registration fee and a list of fish categories. Bragging rights, trophies and cash prizes are on the line.

Fishing can be done from almost anywhere except your local seafood market; fish from the pier, the beach, in the sound, in the bay, or from a boat or kayak. Weigh-ins will take place at Juana’s Pagodas from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. each day. The boundaries are from the Pensacola Pass to the Destin pass and all points north as long as you are still in Florida.

An opportunity to win a Jackson Kayak Coosa FD will also be among the highlights of the rodeo. Chance drawing tickets for the raffle are $20 per chance or three tickets for $50 if purchased at the same time.  There is a “no-purchase” necessary option. Please see www.navarrefishingrodeo.com for details. The kayak is valued at $2,999. The winner will be announced at the awards ceremony Oct. 7. In all, approximately $20,000 in cash and prizes have been given away at past events and this year is expected to be the same.
