Navarre volunteer child advocate Heather Pohlman received the Guardian Ad Litem Volunteer of the Year award for going “above and beyond” in representing and advocating for children in abuse and neglect dependency cases in South Santa Rosa County.
Guardian Ad Litem, a state agency, services 250 children in Santa Rosa County, Child Advocate Manager II Brian Ciulla said. He explained that volunteers visit the children monthly and assess their situation to make recommendations to the court on the child’s behalf.
Child Advocate Manager I Lindsey Dubreuil works closely with Pohlman. She said for Pohlman it goes beyond those criteria.
“She got the award because of her excellent advocacy for the children,” Dubreuil said. “She’s very involved, and she knows her cases inside and out. She works very hard at that and takes it very seriously. She wants to know them. She’s very personally invested in her cases and it shows.”
Pohlman started volunteering in 2008, and has since worked on 18 cases. She said her daughter motivated her to join.
