Holley by the Sea resident Crystal Reder knew she had artistic talent since she was five years old. She said she could paint and draw better than her peers, and she challenged herself to always be the best in the class.
“My goal was to make my picture look better than anyone else’s in the class,” she said of her younger self. “As time went on it was a hobby and when I had projects I always drew whatever the project was about instead of cutting it out. I took college level art classes in high school.”
But as Reder got older and questions of a career moved to the forefront, she was presented with a choice: pursue what she loves or attend college to start a different kind of career.
She chose the latter, earning a bachelor’s degree in clinical radiation sciences with a certification in nuclear medicine.
She followed that career for about 10 years, helping cancer patients and maintaining a demanding yet rewarding schedule. She got married and had two sons.
