As development and visiting tourists make it harder to find flat, undisturbed sandy space along the Gulf of Mexico’s beaches, endangered least terns have come up with an interesting solution: rooftops.
The birds are nesting on top of grocery stores, schools and shopping centers. It seems like a stretch from their normal homes, but when these buildings are constructed with gravel rooftops they resemble the texture and color of beach sand.
