In October, Santa Rosa County Commissioners decided to make costly but much-needed improvements to the county’s antiquated emergency communication radio system. That upgrade, estimated to cost $7.2 million, will not only improve communication among first responders but will also aid school officials during crises.
Santa Rosa County Emergency Management Director Brad Baker appeared before the Santa Rosa County School Board at its Oct. 23 meeting. Baker apprised members of the improvement plans and sought permission to erect a communications tower on the site of the former Munson Elementary School.
“We’re embarking on the new age of technology for our radio system, and we identified a gap in that area of the county that we would like to enhance as part of this project,” Baker said, noting the system’s design will allow the schools to partner with the county.
