On Friday, Oct. 28, work crews performing work on Interstate 10 approximately three-tenths of a mile west of exit 26 found human remains in a wooded area adjacent to the fence line. Santa Rosa County deputies were contacted and confirmed the remains were human. According to a press release issued by the Sheriff’s Office, the remains were skeletonized and there was no indication of the demographics or identity, but surmised that the remains had been there for some time. On Friday, due to impending darkness, the scene was secured and shut down for the evening. On Saturday morning, investigators recovered an identification card at the scene but will not release any identity information until positive identification can be made. There is no cause of death at this time. Further details will be released as they become available.
