Frigid wind and water welcomes plungers

The surf along Navarre Beach let up for this year’s New Year’s Day plunges, but the temperatures were almost freezing.

During the beach’s newest Jan. 1 event, the Pirate Plunge, wind gusts reached 24 miles per hour and the temperature was 32 degrees. Still, a few dozen brave souls went running into the Gulf of Mexico near the Navarre Beach Fishing Pier. A larger crowd gathered to watch and take pictures from dry land.
