Folks on the Navarre Beach Fishing Pier (NBFP) jumped into action Aug. 12 as two sea turtle were rescued after being accidentally hooked.
Snappy, the larger of the two turtles at 15 inches and 12.5 pounds, was snagged and swallowed a fishing hook. As soon as fishing pier staff got word, the Responsible Pier Initiative protocol took over. Stephanie Maddox brought down the official sea turtle net and scooped Snappy up. Brag Helwig, manager of Lagerheads on the Gulf, assisted Maddox and her son in placing Snappy in the 75 gallon tub that the pier uses for such events with a salt-water dampened towel over his shell.
“Once we got the first one in, people were applauding; it became a pretty heartwarming event” Helwig said.
