When she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011, Jan Stephens Harris and her friend Joyce Cox went on a mission spreading awareness to anyone who would listen.
“I wanted everyone in Navarre to know what ‘pink’ was about,” she said, referring to the color designated to Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “I wanted people without insurance to get mammograms. I didn’t want anyone else to go through what I went through.”
By the time she was diagnosed, Harris’ cancer was already stage 3.
“No one had cancer in my family,” she said. “I never checked myself.”
