Some like it hot, Navarre likes it spicy

Navarre likes its chili spicy, extra spicy if possible. That’s what you would’ve discovered if you were among the 75 locals armed with small Styrofoam cups and plastic spoons at the 21st annual Charity Chili Cook-Off hosted at Juana’s Pagodas Sunday, Oct. 19.

“There are several so far that have a lot of spicy flavor,” Nathan Kozakiewicz said, adding that he doesn’t have any regional preferences that some chili-lovers have. “I’m just looking for chili that is spicy with bold flavor.”

Locals hovered over 22 crockpots, each featuring a different texture, smell and taste. Though laughter and chatter filled the space during the two-hour tasting, the cook-off was not just for fun.

The 22 cooks were competing for first place in several categories including Bean There Farted That, Carnivore Amore, Fowl Chili, Double Burner and, the crown jewel, People’s Choice.
