Although temperatures dropped below the threshold for the county’s only south Santa Rosa cold weather shelter to activate, the facility remained closed Dec. 8 and Dec. 9 due to a lack of male volunteers.
Diane Revere, volunteer coordinator for the shelter, located at Navarre’s Community of Christ Church, said it’s unsafe to operate with only female volunteers. Revere points out an average of five to seven people utilize the overnight shelter and the majority is male.
“We don’t have but one male volunteer,” Revere said Monday night, noting four more volunteers are sought, especially males. Volunteer training is provided at no cost.
