Chamber to merge Fun Fest into concert series

The Navarre Beach Area Chamber of Commerce has decided to merge two of their beach front events, Fun Fest and what used to be Thursdays in the Park.

The decision followed last months approval by the County Commission to move the weekly concert series that will run from June 1 to August 31 from Navarre Park to the Gulf side of Navarre Beach. The move was brought on by safety concerns regarding U.S. Highway 98.

NBACOC President Judy Morehead said with the recent transition of location, there is a lot of planning for the board and members to do.

“Due to the relocation of the event and the preparation time, the board voted to focus on the 14 week concert series and intermingle some of the features of the Fun Fest on concert nights,” she said in an email to the membership. “Obviously, it would have been great to do both, but we felt the two events would suffer equally.   This will also give us an opportunity to promote more of our business members and non-profit organizations over a longer period of time.”

Morehead said historically only 7 percent of the vendors for Fun Fest were actually members of the NBACOC.

“It’s not that we don’t appreciate our artist and other vendors, but the reality is that we want to promote our members,” she said. “Because of the transition we don’t want to take the chance of both of these events suffering, so we are looking to make the concert series a more member center event.”

Morehead said the activities and sponsors from Fun Fest will be incorporated into the new concert location as 14 smaller Fun Fest-like events.

“It is not to say that Fun Fest is not going to happen next next year, just not this year,” she said.

Morehead said they could not call it “in the park” anymore and a rename is in the works. The new location is part of overflow parking and Sand Crab Pavilion. There will be an option to sit in the sand or on the pavement, and a dancing area will be established.

“We are still lining up our bands,” she said. “We plan on having children’s activities. We want to have sand buckets available. We will have games and activities.”
