Famed conservationist and ocean explorer Fabien Cousteau joined residents and visitors of Navarre Beach Saturday, Sept. 28, for a day of marine conservation education and dune restoration alongside the Navarre Beach Fishing Pier during “A Day for the Dunes.” The event was a partnership between the Dune Doctors, the Fabien Cousteau Ocean Learning Center and the Navarre Beach Marine Science Center.
Row after row of sea oats were planted by the volunteers. These native plants protect against coastal erosion that can occur during extreme weather events. This habitat is strong enough to stabilize the shoreline but fragile enough to be damaged by foot and vehicle traffic. The event also offered education opportunities for all ages.
