Rooftops provide nesting alternative for shorebirds

When beaches are overcrowded, birds search for other habitats for nesting.

Gravel rooftops seem to be a popular choice. Numbers are on the rise according to Emily McKiddy, the Northwest Florida Rooftop Nesting Coordinator for Audubon Florida.

“I’d say that the birds are increasing their nontraditional nesting locations,” McKiddy said. “They are also nesting heavily on the Navarre Causeway just because not as many people are in the area.”

McKiddy said there about 50 rooftops in the panhandle area that are currently active nesting areas.
