Humans aren’t the only ones who can get health insurance. Pets can to.
And while it’s not common yet for pet owners in the United States to consider the option of purchasing insurance for their pets, it is starting to grow in popularity, according to Emily Briggs, a customer service manager for Pet Plan.
“It’s a growing industry,” Briggs said. “I would say about one to two percent of the pet owners have insurance, so we have a lot of catching up to do compared to pet owners in the United Kingdom.”
Briggs said in the UK close to 30 percent of pet owners have insurance and the co-founders of Pet Plan, which started in Pennsylvania 10 years ago, decided to bring the idea of pet insurance to the country because they had racked up a $5,000 vet bill and couldn’t afford it.
