FWC seeks help monitoring horseshoe crabs

FWC_Logo_GSpring marks horseshoe crabs’ mating season, and biologists from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Committee (FWC) want the public’s help identifying spawning sites. According to FWC, conditions around the full moon March 16 and the new moon March 30 will create perfect opportunities to observe the spawning behavior of horseshoe crabs.

If observed, beachgoers are asked to note how many horseshoe crabs they see and whether they are mating. In addition, biologists ask observers to provide the date, time, location habitat type and environmental conditions – such as tides and moon phase – when a sighting occurs.

Information may be provided to FWC via the organization’s website myfwc.com, by emailing horseshoe@myfwc.com or calling 866-252-9326.
