FWC in process of reclassifying manatee status

Katie Tripp won’t argue that the manatee population in Florida is at a healthy level.

But the Director of Science and Conservation at the Save the Manatee Club in Maitland doesn’t believe it’s a reason for the United States Fish and Wildlife Service to make plans to downlist all West Indian manatees from endangered to threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

“We want people to understand this is not the end of the story,” Tripp said. “No one is arguing that the manatee population hasn’t gotten better because it has. A lot of work went into making that happen. There is still a lot of work that needs to be done.”
