Ferry service delayed until late spring

Gulf Islands National Seashore Superintendent Dan Brown joked on Monday morning that people have wanted a ferry service in Pensacola Bay for 50 years.

Their wait will be over soon. It’s just going to extend a couple of months longer than expected.

Slated to begin in March of 2017, service to Pensacola, Pensacola Beach and Fort Pickens will begin at some point in May, more than likely before Memorial Day weekend.

“Our target date is mid-May,” Brown said. “It probably would have been best when we started working on the project three years ago to give a more broad start time of spring of 2017. Our hope and plan was to capture spring break, but there are so many moving pieces to this, and each one is lagging behind just a little bit.”

Part of the reason for setting March as the original start date was to copy the national seashore ferry service already in place in Mississippi.
