The Florida Department of Health reported Aug. 1 a confirmed case of Vibrio vulnificus in Escambia County. It is the first confirmed case in Northwest Florida this year of the bacteria that occurs naturally in warm coastal waters.
A Gulf Breeze man died from the bacteria after fishing in the Santa Rosa Sound last fall. Thirteen cases have been reported so far this year and three people have died from the bacteria in Florida.
