Rotary bringing rescue tubes to beach

The Rotary Club of Navarre has placed the first rescue tube on Navarre Beach and plans to erect one at each of the county’s public beach accesses.

Ed Carpenter, president of Navarre Rotary, said after taking leadership of the organization, he eyed the success of a similar program funded by fellow Rotarians in Hawaii.

“They have 140 (tubes) which have saved 100 lives,” Carpenter said, pointing out the Hawaiian effort was aimed to mitigate a lack of lifeguards, which is also an issue on Navarre Beach.
