The tradition of facing frigid water on the first day of the New Year has been in the U.S. for more than 100 years, starting in 1904 with the L Street Brownies Polar Plunge in Boston.
On Jan. 1, 2017, Navarre residents will join that tradition, shivering and splashing in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico for two charity plunges.
The second annual Pelican Plunge put on by the Navarre Chamber Foundation will see the first set of swimmers take to the water at 11 a.m. at the Navarre Beach Fishing Pier. Registration costs $25-$27.
