Lifeguarding on Navarre Beach: ‘Best job ever’

With tourists visiting Navarre Beach in record numbers, lifeguards have experienced quite a busy season.

Much has changed for this year’s contingent. Missing are former lead guards Jessie Ton and Greg Matechik, who together had about 15 years of experience. In addition, guards are also using ATVs in an effort to provide protection for areas west of the pier.

Taking on lead guards’ responsibilities this year are Matt Ritter and Charles Marek.

“Besides doing our own jobs, we have to delegate all other tasks to be performed,” Ritter, who is in his fifth season on Navarre Beach, said. He is a member of the nursing program at Pensacola State College.
