The sound of rainfall. That’s what the turtle whisperers listen for to determine when baby turtles are going to make their debut.
“It sounds like rain falling as the sand trickles down. You also hear the ‘swoop, swoop’ sound of the flippers,” turtle patrol volunteer Jim Holmes said, describing the sounds made when the baby turtles hatch and begin climbing toward the top of their nest.
That when a depression can be seen in the nest-another sign the hatchlings are about to begin their journey.
Visitors from Nashville to Birmingham got to witness that beginning along with locals just after dusk Sept. 17 near beach access 10.
