The summer tourist season is in full swing on Navarre Beach, and west of the fishing pier, lines of bright blue and green umbrellas once again dot the waterline courtesy of rental companies.
These wooden, collapsible chairs with matching sun shades offer visitors relief from carrying their belongings to the water. Pay a fee, and the already setup lounges are yours to enjoy.
But for Navarre Beach Utilities Supervisor Terry Wallace the chairs are a source of complaints every year.
“That happens yearly, where the tourists have run-ins with the chair vendors on the beach,” he said. “If you are a visitor you have to set up behind them because you can’t get to the beach. It would tick me off if I couldn’t get to the water.”
Two chair rental companies are currently doing business on Navarre Beach, VIP Beach Rentals and Sunset Beach Services. Both of these companies file contracts to provide service to individual condominiums on the gulf side.
Sunset Beach Service Attendant Dyllan Rogers said it is just good manners not to set up in front of the rental chairs. He comes out at 5 a.m. each day to set up his more than 60 chairs with umbrellas along the water’s edge.
