Visitors can step back in time in the north end of Santa Rosa County, which offers endless adventures for outdoor enthusiasts in one of the largest state forests. Blackwater River State Forest contains nearly 200,000 acres of undeveloped woodlands and waterways with an abundance of longleaf pine forests, providing scenic vistas and a diversity of flora and fauna.
The headquarters for the forest, which is managed by the Florida Forest Service, is located roughly 20 miles north of Milton in the small community of Munson. Within a couple of miles of the headquarters are two popular recreation areas – Krul Lake and Bear Lake, both providing a bounty of outdoor fun.
Picturesque Krul Lake is a 6.5-acre spring-fed swimming area which features a boardwalk spanning the length of the lake. From the boardwalk visitors can see many fish and turtles amid crystal clear water. Nearby Bear Lake is a 107-acre lake which is a favorite spot for fishermen.
