Ice Flyers introduce new head coach

Jeff Bes was introduced as the new head coach of the Pensacola Ice Flyers Tuesday night, speaking to fans and the media inside a packed conference room in the Bay Center.

It was a homecoming of sorts for Bes, who spent part of his 18-year professional career in Pensacola, playing for the then Ice Pilots during the 2000-01 season.

“It’s nice coming back. It’s like coming home,” Bes said. “It’s an honor to be coaching here. I look forward to the season ahead. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Bes is quite familiar with the franchise beyond his playing days, having coached in the SPHL with Mississippi and Fayetteville, where he has been the last two years. Fayetteville had the second-best record in the league last year but was eliminated by the Ice Flyers in the opening round of the playoffs.

The Ice Flyers have won three championships, the last in 2016, and Bes understands the expectations will be high.

“The tradition here is fantastic,” Bes said. “You have to come and set the tone the way you want it to be set, move forward from that day, and the ultimate goal is a championship.”
