In an email sent to all Hurlburt Field personnel from the 1 SOW Public Affairs Office, the base recognized the periodic traffic backups for those leaving base through the main gate during afternoon rush hour.  The PA office says, “We have worked with surrounding counties to find solutions.  Santa Rosa County has funded a long-term traffic study and Okaloosa County is currently seeking funding for their traffic study project. ”

The two projects will seek to sequence traffic lights between Fort Walton Beach and Gulf Breeze and may find other solutions for the counties to implement.  Base officials also working with Florosa Elementary School and the Okaloosa County School Board to find safe alternatives for the school zone there.

In the meantime, the base will reopen the Kerwood Gate, located west of the main gate for right turns only beginning today, May 9 from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m.  The email further says, “We strongly encourage all those working on the east side of Hurlburt and living to the west of Hurlburt to use the Kerwood Gate.”  As a last resort, the email suggests adjusting work hours if that is an available option.
