Huntingdon stunned 23rd-ranked Berry Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs Saturday.
The Hawks held on for a 27-24 win, ending the Vikings’ 22-game home win streak. They advance to play reigning national champion Mary Hardin-Baylor next week in Texas.
Facing the four-time SAA champion Vikings in Georgia, Huntingdon found itself down 17-13 at halftime.
The Hawks led 20-17 going into the fourth but the Vikings took a 24-20 lead before Huntingdon responded with just over four minutes lef. A pick on a last-ditch drive by Berry sealed the deal.
Three former Navarre Raiders are on the Huntingdon roster. Darrell Hixon starts on the offensive line and helped the Hawks roll up 318 yards.
Marc Struck had a stellar game on defense, tallying five tackles and one sack. He also recovered a fumble. Garrett Schluter is a long snapper.
Huntingdon improves to 8-3 and is in the second round for the first time since 2015.
In other playoff news involving former Raiders, Brady Hammel and his Miles Golden Bears suffered a 36-7 loss to Lenoir-Rhyne Saturday in North Carolina.
Hammel connected on his lone extra-point attempt in this NCAA Division II playoff game. He averaged 36.5 yards per kickoff in the game.
Hammel has been with Miles the last two seasons and a part of back-to-back Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles.
