Home opener on horizon for Argonauts

For the first time this season the University of West Florida football team is playing a home game.

The Argonauts host the University of Virginia-Lynchburg Saturday at Blue Wahoos Stadium. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. for the first ever meeting between the two schools.

After crushing Shorter last Saturday, UWF faces a team that has been outscored 150-42 in its first three games. The Dragons gave up 30 or more in all but two games last season, allowing 79 once, and got shutout three times in 2017.

Rolling up the third-highest yardage total in program history (556) last week in a 42-14 win over the Hawks, the Argonauts (1-1) hope to carry that momentum into this week.

Austin Reed accounted for six touchdowns, a school record, throwing for four and rushing for two. Navarre’s own Quentin Randolph enjoyed his first 100-yard receiving game, finishing with four catches for 117 yards and a touchdown.

The defense gave up just 93 yards after halftime and did not allow a point in the final two quarters of play. Chanler Ferguson paved the way with five tackles and an interception.

UWF is playing the 40th game in the history of its program and has never lost a home opener.

UWF is 23-16 all-time, including a 9-7 record in home games.

Austin Reed has thrown for 558 yards on the season, connecting five times on scoring strikes and rushing for two scores.

Quentin Randolph is a former walk-on at UWF and leads the team in receiving with eight catches for 169 yards. He has caught three or more passes in a game six times.

The Argos have rolled up 818 yards of offense.

Chanler Ferguson leads the defense with 13 tackles.
