What’s all the fuss about coconut oil?

Coconut oil has been showing up on grocery shelves, but what the heck is it and how is it used?

Coconut oil is solid at room temperature but melts at about 78 degrees. It’s considered one of the best nutritional and personal products for your health. But make sure when you do buy it, it’s organic, unrefined virgin coconut oil in a glass jar says Amy Likins, co-owner of Synergy Organic Juice Bar and Café in Ft. Walton Beach.

Likins says coconut oil is great for the body because it’s naturally antimicrobial and antibacterial and helps natural oils last longer. “I use it a lot in my baking and cooking when I sauté, and use it as a carrier oil with other essential oils on my body,” she said. “I add it solid to most recipes and it just easily melts as it’s stirred.”
