Texting posture, sitting now major now concerns

“Stand up straight!” said everyone’s mom always.

That eye-rolling inducing phrase is even more applicable now than it ever has been however.

“We call it the texting posture,” said Michelle Gambel, PT, DPT at Select Physical Therapy in Navarre. “We see it more now in teenagers than we used to.”

Gambel says it’s a problem for all age demographics but they are now seeing younger ages affected by back and neck pain. The “texting posture” or sitting with your head forward, rounded shoulders and a slumped posture puts 36 pounds of pressure on the upper back and 12 pounds on the neck. Conversely, sitting up straight evenly divides the weight throughout the spine and neck.
