A rare beaked whale species that beached itself along Opal Beach Monday died shortly after being discovered, adding to a rising number of marine mammal deaths along the panhandle.
The Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge (ECWR) Marine Mammal Stranding Team responded to Opal Beach, just west of Navarre at around 4:30 p.m. after beachgoers spotted the beached whale and called it in.
