Downtown Milton has emerged as the most likely site for the proposed new Santa Rosa County courthouse if the challenges of environmental permitting and stormwater control at the low-lying locale can be met.
Although the county commissioners aren’t scheduled to vote on the location until early next year, three of the panel’s five members now support the downtown location pending an engineering report.
A representative of HOK Inc., an architectural company involved with the courthouse planning, confirmed to commissioners on Monday that the spot under consideration on Pine Street, which has been described as a “swamp,” is probably wetlands as defined by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
