A Gulf Breeze man is in jail after police said he hit a marked patrol car on U.S. 98 and Soundside Drive at 12:15 Monday morning.
According to the report, Richard Lee Schwarting, 45, was driving a Chevy Silverado west on U.S. 98. He was in the outside travel lane, and due to construction, the highway went from two lanes to one.
Deputy Adam Teichner, 41, of Milton, was sitting in a marked patrol car with lights activated in the coned-off area. As Schwarting neared Teichner’s vehicle, police said he drifted through the cones and entered the closed lane where Teichner was parked. The left side of Schwarting’s car sideswiped the right side of Teichner’s car, and police said Schwarting continued driving westbound after the collision until deputies pulled him over at Magnolia Manor Drive.
No injuries were reported.
Schwarting was arrested on charges of DUI with property damage, leaving the scene, refusal to provide breath sample and careless driving.
He is being held on $1,000 bond.
