Police: Body found at Confederate site; race not a factor

Police say the death of a homeless man whose body was found at a Confederate monument in Pensacola was not racially motivated.

The Pensacola Police Department said Monday that the case is being investigated as a homicide.

The body was found Sunday morning on a downtown Pensacola park bench near a monument to the Confederacy. The park is frequented by the city’s homeless.

Police say they were alerted after a passerby found the body. An autopsy is being performed.

Police say the victim’s name won’t be released until relatives are notified.

Police Capt. Paul Kelly says detectives have determined that the death wasn’t racially motivated. But police have not released the race of the man or details on a potential motive, nor have officials said how detectives determined race wasn’t a factor.
