Santa Rosa County expects to receive $1.3 million to build an artificial reef off of Navarre Beach while expanding the two existing reefs.
The money will come from the Natural Resource Damage Assessment fund, part of the agreement with BP following the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. A total of $11.4 million has been set aside for a five-county regional reefing program.
Navarre Chamber Foundation President Mike Sandler said the plan is to expand the two near-shore reefs and construct a new reef which will stretch 1 mile out from shore and have a width of 2 miles.
