The Navarre Press received 10 awards at the Florida Press Association’s 2014 Better Weekly Newspaper Contest Friday in Orlando.
The paper earned three first-place awards, including Agriculture and Environmental with “Endangered gopher tortoise burrow found in HBTS,” by Sandi Kemp. “This is an important local story and provided a much-needed wake-up call,” the judges said.
First place editorial went to “No comment,” by Ashley Varese. “It is always important for a community newspaper to hold politicians’ feet to the fire and this editorial does regarding our most basic request in the job of bringing the news into the light, into the public,” judges commented.
Navarre Press also won first place for Overall Graphic Design, Staff.
Second-place awards included Outdoor and Recreation, “Navarre waters provide healing current for veterans,” by Sandi Kemp; Local Government Reporting, the Santa Rosa County Courthouse, multiple stories by Romi White; Sport Page or Section, Staff; Spot News Photo, Sandi Kemp; Education Reporting, “All about the big yellow bus,” by Shana Roberson; and Editorial Page, Staff.
Navarre Press earned third place for Website Excellence.
